How to Compare Home Cleaning Services and Find Reliable NDIS Support

Ring five cleaning companies and you'll get five different answers about price, what's included and who'll actually turn up. It's hard to compare like for like. Add an NDIS plan, a garage that needs sorting and a yard that's getting away from you, and it's no wonder people put it off.

Humming started in Brisbane in 2018 as Cherubs in the Home QLD, with our owners doing the work themselves: Nikki cleaning and Jack gardening. We've been answering these questions ever since. This guide is what we wish every family knew before choosing: how to compare home cleaning services, what separates a reliable NDIS provider from the rest, and how to pick the right carpet, garage and garden maintenance help without getting burnt.

Quick answer: Compare home cleaning services on six things: NDIS registration and worker screening, insurance, whether you'll keep the same cleaner, exactly what's included, transparent pricing in a written agreement, and how well they communicate. Reviews that name real workers are the best tie-breaker. The same checklist works for carpet, garage and garden maintenance services.

How do I compare different home cleaning services?

Ask every provider the same six questions (registration, insurance, consistency, inclusions, pricing and communication) and get the answers in writing.

This is the side-by-side we'd use if we were choosing a cleaner for our own family:

Use the same questions for every provider so you're comparing like with like.
What to compareWhat good looks likeRed flag
Registration and screeningNDIS registered (essential for agency-managed plans), with workers holding NDIS Worker Screening clearancesVague answers about checks
InsurancePublic liability cover, confirmed before the first visit“We've never needed it”
ConsistencyA regular cleaner, with a familiar backup when they're awayA different stranger every visit
What's includedA written checklist for each room“We'll just do what we can”
PricingItemised rates in a service agreement, and the same price NDIS and non-NDIS clients pay for the same supportExtras added once they're inside
CommunicationEasy to reach, talks to your Support Coordinator, asks for feedbackCalls go unanswered

On pricing, NDIS Code of Conduct guidance has asked providers since late 2023 to make sure participants pay a similar price to non-NDIS customers for the same support (Minister for the NDIS, December 2023). If a quote looks higher because you're on a plan, ask why.

How we do it at Humming

Here's how we set up every new client:

  1. Reach out by phone, email or our online form.
  2. We have a get-to-know-you phone call, or a home visit if you'd prefer, and put your service agreement together.
  3. We assign one person to your service, so they learn how you like things done and you don't have to explain it again and again.
  4. After the first clean, we ask for your feedback and adjust anything that isn't right.

There's no lock-in contract. You can change, pause or cancel at any time, with 48 hours' notice for cancellations. For NDIS participants, services approved under your plan have no out-of-pocket costs; materials such as mulch or plants are the client's cost, as is anything outside your plan. Can you recommend reliable NDIS support services for home cleaning?

A reliable NDIS home cleaning service is registered, screens its workers, keeps the same cleaner where it can, works with your Support Coordinator and Plan Manager, and has a clear complaints process. Humming Home Services is one NDIS registered option across Greater Brisbane, Toowoomba and the Sunshine Coast.

Reliability isn't something a website can promise, so check it yourself. Start by confirming registration on the NDIS Commission's Find a registered provider search. Then ask how they handle a sick cleaner; the answer tells you how much thought they've given your routine. Ask for their complaints process too. Good providers have one, and you can also make a complaint to the NDIS Commission if something goes wrong. Finally, read their reviews for long-term clients.

Here's how we handle it. Every Humming team member has a face-to-face interview and a Disability Worker Screening Check, and completes the NDIS Worker Orientation Module and an infection prevention module before their first job. If your regular cleaner is sick or on holidays, we ask whether you'd like someone to fill in so you don't miss a service.

Our home cleaning services are guided by four values: kindness, safety, integrity and communication. We work with private homeowners and with agency-managed, plan-managed and self-managed participants, and we'd rather tell you upfront if something isn't a good fit. Our guide to NDIS cleaners in Brisbane, Toowoomba and the Sunshine Coast covers each area in more detail.

“We've been with Humming for over 2 years now, they have made life easier for us getting qualified cleaners and gardeners sensitive to my sister's needs, through the NDIS.”

Home cleaning in Toowoomba, Gatton and Laidley

If you're comparing home cleaning in Toowoomba, it pays to go local. A cleaner based in the region turns up on time through the winter fog, knows how quickly dust settles when the westerlies blow, and doesn't have to come up the range to reach you. Our local cleaners work with NDIS participants and private clients across Toowoomba, Gatton and Laidley, and our gardeners look after yards in the area too.

Greater Brisbane

Brisbane is where Humming began. Today we clean and garden across Brisbane Northside, the City and Southside, Logan, Ipswich, Moreton Bay and the Redlands. With an area that big, ask any provider how often they're actually in your suburb, not just whether it's on their map.

“Becca is really good. Everything was spotless. So happy as to how the service is set up.”

Aaron, Brisbane

Sunshine Coast

On the Sunshine Coast we work from coastal areas to the hinterland. Humidity and salt air near the beach make regular bathroom and laundry care worth it, and if you're up in the hinterland, check that a provider really travels that far on a regular schedule.

How do I choose the right carpet cleaning service?

Choose a carpet cleaner with formal training or trade association membership, public liability insurance, a written guarantee and an itemised quote. Hot water extraction, often called steam cleaning, suits most carpets. Don't pick on price alone.

Carpet cleaning in Australia is largely unregulated, so CHOICE suggests looking for a Certificate II or III in carpet cleaning operations or membership of a trade association with a code of practice (CHOICE carpet cleaning guide). When you search for carpet cleaning near me, ask each company:

  • Is pre-vacuuming, spot treatment and moving furniture included, or extra?
  • How long will the carpet take to dry? With good airflow, a steam clean should be dry within six to eight hours. Much longer usually means it was left too wet.
  • Can I have the guarantee in writing?
  • Will you move mobility equipment, and put it back where it belongs?

Between deep cleans, regular vacuuming does most of the work. That's part of every Humming clean, and our guide to affordable carpet cleaning for NDIS participants explains what the NDIS usually funds and how to keep costs down. If you need a specialist steam clean, call us first and we'll talk through whether we can help.

How can I find reliable garage cleaning services?

Look for a provider who tells you upfront what's included (sweeping, cobwebs, sorting, rubbish removal), how they'll handle chemicals and heavy items, and whether they're insured. For NDIS participants, a safe, clear garage can matter as much as a clean kitchen.

What a garage clean usually includes

Garage cleans vary a lot between companies, so pin these down before you book:

  • Sweeping, cobweb removal and wiping down shelves and benches.
  • Sorting and decluttering, and who decides what stays.
  • Rubbish removal. Ask whether a tip run is included or charged separately.
  • Old paint, chemicals and gas bottles. These can't go in your household bins; Brisbane City Council explains how to store and drop off household hazardous waste.
  • Clear, trip-free paths to the car, the laundry and the back door, especially if you use a walker or wheelchair.

Garage cleaning isn't a standard line on our service list, so call us before you book. We'll tell you straight what we can and can't take on. Outside, our gardeners already handle yard clearance and green waste, which often covers the overflow from a garage clean-out.

Can you recommend garden maintenance services in my area?

The best garden maintenance service in your area is one that comes on a regular schedule, adjusts with the seasons, keeps paths safe, takes the green waste away and sends the same people each time. Humming's gardening team covers Greater Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and Toowoomba.

Our regular garden maintenance includes:

  • Lawn care and mowing, with edge trimming and clippings cleaned up.
  • Weeding and garden bed care, including hand weeding and mulching.
  • Pruning and hedging, including low branches that block paths.
  • Yard clearance and green waste removal.
  • Small outdoor odd jobs that keep the yard safe and usable.

“He got both yards done to a point now that we can maintain it and that was the ultimate goal. I cant speak highly enough of him.”

Emily, Toowoomba

If you're on the NDIS, our NDIS gardening guide explains how yard care is usually funded.

What are eco-friendly garden cutting services?

Eco-friendly garden cutting means mowing and pruning in a way that wastes less and uses fewer chemicals: recycling green waste instead of sending it to landfill, hand weeding where practical, mulching garden beds and cutting at the right height for the season.

If this matters to you, ask any gardener:

  • Where does the green waste go? It should be recycled. In Toowoomba, for example, council green waste bins take prunings, weeds and lawn clippings.
  • Do you hand weed, or spray? Hand weeding and mulch reduce the need for herbicides.
  • Will you leave the lawn a bit longer through hot, dry spells? It helps the grass cope.
  • Can you work around my veggie patch, pets or sensory needs?

Our gardeners hand weed, mulch and take green waste away as part of regular yard care. Tell us when we plan your service if you'd like a low-chemical approach.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compare different home cleaning services?

Ask every provider the same questions about registration and worker screening, insurance, keeping the same cleaner, what's included and how pricing works. Get the answers in a written service agreement, then use detailed reviews to decide.

Can you recommend reliable NDIS support services for home cleaning?

Look for an NDIS registered provider with screened workers, consistent cleaners, a clear complaints process and long-term clients. Humming Home Services is one NDIS registered option in Greater Brisbane, Toowoomba and the Sunshine Coast.

How do I choose the right carpet cleaning service?

Choose a carpet cleaner with formal training or trade association membership, public liability insurance, a written guarantee and an itemised quote. Hot water extraction suits most carpets, and price alone shouldn't decide it.

Can you recommend garden maintenance services in my area?

Look for a gardener who comes on a regular schedule, adjusts with the seasons, keeps paths safe, removes green waste and sends the same people each time. Humming's gardening team covers Greater Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and Toowoomba.

What happens if my regular cleaner is sick?

A good provider tells you straight away and offers a replacement. At Humming, if your regular cleaner is sick or on holidays, we ask whether you'd like someone to fill in so you don't miss a service.

How long should carpets take to dry after steam cleaning?

With good ventilation, carpets cleaned by hot water extraction should usually be dry within six to eight hours. If they're still wet after a day, too much water was probably left in.

Can I use one provider for cleaning and gardening?

Yes, if they offer both. It means one service agreement, one point of contact and less coordination for you and your Support Coordinator. Humming provides home cleaning and garden maintenance.

Do you offer home cleaning in Toowoomba?

Yes. Humming Home Services provides NDIS and private home cleaning in Toowoomba, Gatton and Laidley, as well as garden maintenance in the region.

What should I ask a garage cleaning service before booking?

Ask what's included, whether rubbish removal and tip runs cost extra, how they handle old paint and chemicals, and whether they hold public liability insurance.

What makes a garden cutting service eco-friendly?

Recycling green waste, hand weeding and mulching to reduce herbicide use, and mowing at the right height for the season.
